The scope of winterization standards spans residential pools, commercial pools, and public aquatic facilities. Residential in-ground pool, freeze-climate (USDA Hardiness Zones 1–6): Full winterization as described above is standard. The complete blowout-and-plug method is the dominant approach in the northeastern and midwestern United States.

Residential in-ground pool, mild climate (Zones 7–10, e.g., Florida, Arizona): A "soft close" or "partial winterization" applies. Equipment is serviced and cleaned; water chemistry is adjusted; however, full line blowouts are typically unnecessary where sustained freezing does not occur. The pool may be maintained at reduced circulation schedules rather than fully closed.

Commercial pool, public facility: State health department regulations in most jurisdictions require formal written notification of closure and a closure inspection. Reopening is conditioned on a passing inspection. For example, under the Model Aquatic Health Code (MAHC) published by the CDC, facilities must maintain records of closure conditions and water quality at time of closing.
